Lectures on Nanak
Guru Nanak Dev, was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi, which is now known as Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan. Nanak’s teachings emphasize the importance of living a truthful and honest life, practicing selfless service, and meditating on the name of God.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled extensively, spreading his message of equality, compassion, and spiritual unity. His teachings rejected the caste system, ritualism, and religious divisions of his time, promoting a path of righteousness and devotion to God. Nanak’s teachings were later compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib, the central scripture of Sikhism.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s philosophy emphasized the concept of “Ik Onkar,” meaning “One God,” and he believed that all individuals are equal before the divine regardless of their caste, creed, or gender. He also advocated for social justice, equality, and the importance of honest work. Nanak’s teachings laid the foundation for Sikhism, a monotheistic religion that promotes the values of equality, service, and devotion to God.
Today, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary is celebrated as Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti, which is one of the most significant festivals for Sikhs worldwide. It is observed with devotion, prayer, hymn singing, processions, and community service. The teachings of Nanak continue to inspire millions of people around the world and shape the Sikh way of life.
